Real-Time Power BI Dashboard for IoT Devices

Technical Value

In this small demo video I show how Power BI Dashboard can be used to see  Real-Time Data. I know – the Dashboard is not very fancy but it is moving – and that is what this blog post is about.

Internet of Things Devices with sensors can provide it’s data in short intervals and users want to see this data on their dashboard in Real-Time. In this small demo I used a data generator to emulate several devices sending temperatures they measure.

The following picture shows a high-level overview of the architecture:

In Azure you need an Event Hub which receives the data and provides a consumer group endpoint. This endpoint is the input for Azure Stream Analytics. Stream Analytics can have an Output that directly reaches into Power BI (V2) as a Dataset. Just build your Reports from that Dataset as you would from any other Dataset. The Real-Time View in Power BI (V2) is at the Dashboard level, so you have to pin your visualization to your Power BI Dashboard and if the Dataset is updated the Dashboard components based on the Dataset refreshes themselves event driven.
